A Guide To Maternity Bras
You are newly pregnant, got the achy sore breasts that are changing sooner than expected, and you feel a bit unsure what to do. You may have asked yourself already - when should I get fitted for a maternity bra?
We would love to help you answer that, and more!
First of all - stop wearing your underwired bras. They are restrictive and can create issues as your bust changes - leading to discomfort and potential harm.
To start of with - you may want to look into getting fitted for a seamless sleep bra - such as the bestseller Hotmilk My Necessity, which is a flex-fit style allowing for growth and fluctuation. There is a high probability this bra will fit you from early pregnancy to post birth and the rest of your breastfeeding journey.
We often find our mums come in get fitted around 18-20 weeks, 32 weeks, just before birth, and again 4-8 weeks after birth when feeding has established and settled. Not all those times, but often 2-3 times all depending their journey. Just to give you an idea.
If you find you are spilling out of your bra; the cup is cutting in, tissue spilling out the side, or the band starting to get tight - this is a great time to visit us.
In bra styles there are a few options:
Wire-free single cup size for comfort and support.
Wire-free dual cup size for some fluctuation, comfort and support
Wire-free multi cup size are great for any time, but particularly for the hospital and the first few weeks post birth when you fluctuate more than ever, and night time.
Flexi-wire which is more flexible than standard wire and ok to wear as long as it is well fitting. Benefits of a flexi-wire is that it lifts, shapes and separates the breasts. A well-fitted flexi-wire can be worn during pregnancy and from 4-6 weeks after birth when you find the feeding has settled. Just make sure it still fits well, or if you should wait a bit longer before trying it.
It is not recommended to wear flexi-wire in the first few weeks due to the engorgement and fluctuation.
At Room For Two, we prefer to fit you for what size you are, rather than guess what style/size you may be down the track. As we cannot predict what your body will do, we might end up with a bra that is not supportive to begin with and never will be.
If you grow out of the bra and it is still in a good condition - put it aside for now as the chances are it might fit again 4, 6, 10 months after birth.
During a fitting session we will ask you all the questions to find the best options for you at your stage of the journey, longevity and your needs. We recommend that you have minimum 20 minutes to get fitted, and sometimes it can take longer. It is not something to do in a rush if we can avoid it, as every style (and sometimes even colour) can sit different on different body- and breast shapes. It is not uncommon to walk out with different sizes.
Don't stuff around trying to find out your size ordering online or visit a department store - go straight to the experts, your body and mind will thank you for it!
