FAQ
Do I need a labour gown?
A labour gown isn't essential, but many mums find it makes a big difference to how they feel during labour and birth. Unlike a standard hospital gown, a labour gown is designed with comfort, dignity and practicality in mind, helping you move more freely while allowing your healthcare team the access they need. For many women, it's one small way to feel more like themselves during one of life's biggest moments.
Can I wear my own gown during labour?
In most Australian hospitals, yes. Many hospitals are happy for you to wear your own labour gown during the early stages of labour and often throughout your birth, provided it allows your healthcare team access when needed. Every hospital has its own policies, so it's always worth checking with your maternity ward before your due date.
Is it suitable for an epidural?
Yes. These labour gowns are designed with birth in mind and provide easy access for monitoring and care during labour. If your birth plan changes or you choose to have an epidural, the gown is designed to help make medical access easier while still allowing you to feel comfortable and covered.
Can I breastfeed in it?
Absolutely. The front-opening design makes those precious first skin-to-skin cuddles and early breastfeeding moments much easier. Many mums continue wearing their labour gown after birth because it's so comfortable and practical during the first hours with their baby.
Is it suitable for a C-section?
Many mums choose to wear a labour gown before a planned or unplanned Caesarean birth, especially while preparing for surgery and during recovery afterwards. Hospital policies can vary, and your medical team may ask you to change into a hospital gown for the operation itself. After birth, many mums change back into their own gown for comfort, breastfeeding and bonding with their baby.
Should I pack two gowns?
If possible, yes. Labour can be unpredictable, and having a second gown gives you a fresh option if your first becomes wet or stained. Some mums also like having one gown for labour and another clean one to wear during their postnatal stay.
Is it machine washable?
Yes. These labour gowns are machine washable and designed to be worn again or kept as a special reminder of your baby's birth. Always follow the care instructions on the garment to help keep it looking its best.
